8 Things That Surprised Me About Oogie Boogie Bash

I’ve been a Southern California local and Disneyland regular for about 15 years and a longtime annual passholder, but somehow I’d never made it to Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure. Every time I tried to get tickets, the party was already sold out. This year, as soon as I got the email announcing ticket sales in June, I jumped on it and booked our tickets.

A several weeks later, I checked again and was surprised to see several dates still available. The night we’d chosen had sold out, but plenty of others hadn’t.

Was it the ticket prices? The changes to this year’s Halloween entertainment? Maybe longtime attendees weren’t as excited about the changes. I don’t know, but I was excited to go. It was also the start of our fall activities around Los Angeles.

And I’m glad we did! As a first-timer at Oogie Boogie Bash, I found quite a few things surprising once we got there.

1. A Sold-Out Party Didn’t Feel That Crowded

I love Disneyland, but the crowds? Not so much. They’ve become one of my biggest frustrations when visiting the parks. So even though Oogie Boogie Bash was a separately ticketed event, I expected California Adventure to be packed.

We arrived at 3 p.m. for early entry, expecting a long line to get into the park. Instead, there was barely a wait. I wondered if the extreme October heat had something to do with it, but even after the sun went down, the crowds remained manageable.

At one point, I walked straight up to the Starbucks register without waiting. If you’ve spent any time at Disneyland, you know how rare that is.

I’ve read mixed reviews about the crowds at other Oogie Boogie Bash events, with some guests reporting much busier nights. But that wasn’t our experience on October 6. It was so nice walking around without constantly bumping shoulders with other guests.

If this is what a Disney special event can feel like, I’d gladly pay for another one.

2. The Treat Trail Lines Moved Surprisingly Fast

I expected the treat trail lines to be long, slow, and probably not worth my time. I wasn’t really there for the candy anyway. That was just a bonus.

But once I saw how quickly the lines moved and realized some trails featured Disney villains interacting with guests, I was all in. The lines kept moving as cast members handed out treats at different stations, so we never felt like we were standing around waiting forever. You’re getting treats every 5-10 feet throughout the trail.

Seeing the villains made the treat trails even more fun. My favorite was Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

I ended up enjoying the treat trails much more than I expected.

3. They Gave Out So Much Candy

I left Oogie Boogie Bash with Disney’s treat bag filled with candy, and it was heavy. We didn’t even make it through half the treat trails, so I can only imagine how much we could have collected if we’d made that our priority.

Before the party, I’d read mixed reviews about how much candy Disney was handing out, with some guests saying cast members were being stingy. I noticed some were more generous than others, but I also watched a few drop two handfuls of candy into the bags of kids ahead of me. I’m all for spoiling the kids a little.

Some treat trails were shorter and quicker than others, and you could go through them more than once if you wanted to. Candy wasn’t limited to the trails, either. Cast members were also handing out handfuls along Buena Vista Street as guests made their way out of the park.

I saw people leaving with much larger bags filled with candy. If collecting treats is your thing,

4. So Many People Dressed Up

It’s a Halloween party, so of course I expected to see costumes. What surprised me was how many guests really went all out, even in the 90-degree heat and humidity. If I’d planned an elaborate costume, I probably would have ditched it for something more comfortable, but good on them for sticking to the plans. It is a Halloween party, after all! I was happy with my Maleficent ears.

We saw some really creative costumes throughout the park. One older couple dressed as Mary Poppins and Bert, and they were adorable. At one point, I even thought Disney had Cinderella, her stepsisters, and the Fairy Godmother walking around together. Nope, they were all park guests. That’s how good their costumes were.

The Disney characters weren’t the only ones putting on a show that night.

5. The Ride Wait Times Were Surprisingly Short

I’d heard that separately ticketed Disney events were a good time to get on rides because fewer tickets are sold, but I still wasn’t expecting the lines to be this short.

I’ve ridden Radiator Springs Racers plenty of times, but I’ve never gotten on so quickly. The posted wait was 30 minutes, yet we were on the ride in less than 15. I couldn’t believe it. Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark had a 20-minute wait, and Soarin’ Around the World was just 10 minutes.

If rides had been our main priority, we probably could have gone on quite a few more, maybe even ridden our favorites multiple times. But with so many Halloween activities happening throughout the park, we didn’t want to spend the entire night on rides.

It’s too bad Oogie Boogie Bash isn’t held at Disneyland Park because I would’ve loved to ride Haunted Mansion Holiday. I couldn’t help wondering if the wait times would’ve been just as short over there.

6. Villains Grove Wasn’t What I Expected

With a name like Villains Grove, I expected to encounter Disney villains throughout the trail. Instead, it was a walkthrough filled with colorful lights, projections, music, and special effects, but no actual villains.

The experience takes place along Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, which Disney transforms into different villain-inspired scenes. I enjoyed some of the Alice in Wonderland touches, including the Queen of Hearts and Cheshire Cat themes. The lighting and effects were pretty cool, too.

Still, I couldn’t help feeling that Disney could have done more with it. Imagine encountering a few villains along the way to bring those scenes to life. I think that would have made the experience much more interesting.

I’m glad we walked through it, but it wasn’t quite what I’d pictured.

7. I Expected More Halloween Entertainment Throughout the Park

I loved the Halloween decorations throughout California Adventure and seeing the Disney villains along the treat trails, but I expected more entertainment throughout the park.

One of the things I’ve always enjoyed about visiting Disney parks is unexpectedly coming across live entertainment, whether it’s a band playing or performers putting on a little show. I would’ve loved to see more of that at Oogie Boogie Bash, but with a Halloween theme. The treat trails were fun, but I felt Disney missed an opportunity to add more entertainment throughout the night.

That said, I absolutely loved seeing the Headless Horseman ride down the parade route before Madame Leota’s Swinging Wake, the new Haunted Mansion-themed street party. I usually skip the parades when I visit Disneyland, but I made a point to see this one.

I know some longtime Oogie Boogie Bash attendees were disappointed that Disney replaced the traditional Frightfully Fun Parade this year. Since this was my first time attending, I didn’t have the old parade to compare it to. I thought the new street party was delightful and enjoyed what Disney put together.

I just wish there had been more moments like that throughout the park.

8. There Just Wasn’t Enough Time to Do Everything

Even though I would’ve liked Disney to offer more Halloween entertainment, by the end of the night, I couldn’t believe how quickly the time passed. Between the treat trails, rides, and Halloween street party, we still didn’t get to do everything we wanted.

And we didn’t even stop for character meet-and-greet photos. That’s never really been my thing, but I know it’s a big part of the experience for others. We were happy seeing the villains along the treat trails without waiting in separate lines for photos.

If you’re planning to attend Oogie Boogie Bash, my biggest advice is to decide what matters most to you beforehand. There’s more to fit into one night than you might think, even when the crowds and lines are manageable.

Would I go again? Absolutely. And next time, I’ll have a better idea of what I want to prioritize.

We Made Time for Disney Fall Treats, Too
We also squeezed in a few seasonal treats during our visit. My favorite was the Pumpkin Pie Shake from Schmoozies, which tasted just like pumpkin pie. The Oktoberfest Hot Dog from Award Wieners was also really good. Both are worth trying if you’re visiting Disney California Adventure during the fall.

A Few Tips for Your First Oogie Boogie Bash

⏰ Make the most of early entry, but watch the weather. You can enter California Adventure at 3 p.m., three hours before the party starts. It’s a good time for rides or shopping. But after dealing with nearly 100-degree heat, I might arrive later next time if the forecast is similar.

🎃 Know what you want to do most. We went into Oogie Boogie Bash with a pretty go-with-the-flow attitude, but I knew I didn’t want to miss the Headless Horseman or the Halloween street party. Everything else we fit in around those. You don’t need to plan every minute, but it helps to know what matters most to you.

🐎 Plan ahead for the Headless Horseman. Check the event guide for the route and times. During our 2026 visit, the Headless Horseman started near The Little Mermaid at 6:45 p.m. and headed toward Hollywood Blvd. The 9:45 p.m. appearance traveled in the opposite direction. We arrived about 30 minutes early to get a good spot.

💧 Dress for the weather and bring a refillable water bottle. October can still be incredibly hot in Southern California. I wore cotton shorts, a tank top, and my Maleficent ears, and I was glad I kept things comfortable. Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated all night, especially if it’s as hot as it was during our visit.

🍬 Bring a bigger bag if you want lots of candy. Disney provides treat bags, but you can bring your own if you plan on visiting as many treat trails as possible.
